The second poster I submitted for AIGA Jacksonville’s Always Summer Poster show was for the song “Destruction of a Statue” by the band Suicide Silence. I felt like the mixtape part of the show could use some metal…. and blood

Singer, Mitch Lucker sings about the destruction of beauty. The statue image is actually a digital sculpture from Scott-Eaton (check em out, they are sick!). I wanted to achieve an eroded look for the statue. I created some texture using the Ink Outlines filter in Photoshop then vectorized the image in Illustrator. The bloody background is a vector tracing of my own blood. Long story short, a long long time ago, I had a crazy bloody nose and my sink was nasty and bloodied up. I thought it was the coolest image, so I took a picture of it and finally used it in a poster. You can say it’s little bit of me in the composition! The black scratches behind the statue is the bands old logo from their 1st EP, in which “Destruction of a Statue” was first recorded. Check it out!

AIGA Always Summer Poster Show 2010 Poster-1

On September 25th, the AIGA Jacksonville Chapter successfully held their second annual ‘Always Summer’ Poster Show & Mixtape. The idea is to pick a song(s) that remind you of summer and turn it into a poster. Last year I chose a song by Soulfly (check out my 2009 entry).

This year I chose to do two posters. The first one I did was a poster for the song “Suave (DJ Blass Remix)” by the group Calle 13. They are one of the very very few reggaeton groups I like. They don’t produce the typical poppy reggaeton music like Daddy Yankee, Wisin y Yandel, etc. Calle 13′s music is a creative mix of hip-hop, experimental, cumbia and electronic music, among others. Their lyrical content is strange, perverse and humorous. I dig it! Below is the music video for this song.

The poster borrows the imagery used on the cover of their self-titled album. Some of the elements in the composition are from other songs on the album, ie the giraffe, the ants etc. Yes, I am aware that it kind of looks like the Skyy Vodka ad. I’ve never seen the ad until my classmate made the reference. Anyway, I really enjoyed the process of illustrating this poster. I also enjoyed the strange faces people made when they looked at it at the poster show lol! If you can see the hidden imagery, leave a comment stating what you think it is!

Publix/Winn-Dixie Merger?

What if Publix and Winn-Dixie merged? Since Winn-Dixie’s “fresh checked everyday” marketing has become so strong, my prediction would be dropping the Winn-Dixie name and keeping the ‘check’ in the brandmark. What are your thoughts?

T-Rex T-Shirt Design

A couple weeks back, the AIGA Aijax Student Group got together and held a screenprinting workshop. Some of us previously participated in past workshops with screenprinting beast, Sean Tucker (http://dogandponyshowprints.wordpress.com/). This time around, we used what we learned from Sean, as well as help from screenprinting gurus Mitch Kelly and Ryan Newhouser, and conducted the workshop ourselves. The event became a fun, all-day hangout/work session. Below is the T-Rex design I printed on a shirt and zip-up (the yellow print was a test-print on cardboard).

Dish-It-Out Custom Plate

The Art Institute of Jacksonville’s Gallery Group put together the Dish-It-Out Plate Show at the AiJax Gallery. The AIGA AiJax Student Group help facilitate the event. Participants submitted plate designs on a round paper template and were limited to Crayola washable markers. The templates were sent out to be adhered to dishwasher safe blank plates.

I executed my piece using the ink from the markers and a spray bottle. It was inspired by a spray painting I did a few months back. It doesn’t have an official name, but I refer to it as the “Rainbow Planet” lol. Printer’s Mark

Old printing houses used to add their ‘mark’ to documents they printed. This would be mine in modern times. XMS stands for my birthday (x-mas), outward radiating orthogonal lines represent energy, the eight-pointed star stands for my family and the three dots represent the trinity. In essence, it’s a personally branded logo.

Predators Hand-Rendered Poster

This is a movie poster in the style of an illuminated manuscript. It has a slight Byzantium style with the gold leafing, textura-style calligraphic type, decorated drop-cap, with some colophon copy and a tiny printer’s mark. All styles inspired from the historical period of the German Illuminated Manuscript.

Last quarter I took a bookmaking class taught by Graham Young. Learning to hand bind books is a big plus. The learning process definitely took some time but now I can add this to my skillset.

This book was made in Print Production class. The body copy was formatted in InDesign and the cover was designed in Photoshop. It was on display at the Art Institute’s gallery. The cover shows signs of some wear but the binding is still intact.

Wood Tile Tiger Illustration

In our Idea Generation class, taught by Tonya Lee, we had a bunch of wood tiles left over from a mosaic installation. I snagged one and started drawing on it. Used some charcoal and pastels.

Tattoo Flash Electric Guitar

This guitar was a featured piece at the September 09 Artwalk at Printing.com. I love tattoos and I’ve got a couple myself. If you’re a tattoo enthusiast, you might recognize the imagery. I used Ed Hardy flash as reference and used black paint pens.
